Things We Christians Can Do To Help Our Country (Part 4)

“So love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul, and strength. Memorize his laws and tell them to your children over and over again. Talk about them all the time, whether you're at home or walking along the road or going to bed at night, or getting up in the morning.” Deuteronomy 6:4-7, Contemporary English Version

In January 1999, Coach Ken Carter chained the doors of the gymnasium of Richmond High School in California. Why? Fifteen out of his 45 players were not doing well academically as part of their contract as student athletes. That controversial decision earned him both ire and praise. What’s the big deal? The team was undefeated. The record was 13-0 to be exact. The lockdown caused them to forfeit two league games. Despite that, Coach Carter declared, “No practice and no games until grades improve.”

His efforts paid off. One of his players was Wayne Oliver. He was a straight-F student before playing for Carter. He ended up with Oklahoma’s Cameron University. In fact, all of the 15 offending athletes went to college. Not bad for a school where only 23 of its 200+ graduates went on to college. Richmond High was one of the worst in that school district. But, because of the efforts of Coach Carter, it even won a state performance award.

You know why he risked his neck? In an interview, Coach Carter said, “If it’s for our kids, everything is worth it.”

You know one of the things we Christians can do to help our country? Be a good parent.
[1] We are commanded: “Teach [our] children right from wrong, and when they are grown they will still do right.” (Proverbs 22:6) We have to teach them love for God. We have to lead them to Christ and guide them in their spiritual growth. Today’s kids are tomorrow’s leaders. They hold the key to our future. What kind of leaders they would become depends on how we raise our children.

Let us not spare any effort to raise our kids well. Remember, if it’s for our kids, everything is worth it.

P.S. This week, “Tanglaw Sa Landas ng Buhay” (a radio Bible program of Back to the Bible Philippines aired Monday to Friday, 7:00PM, over 702 DZAS AM) features my series on “Decoding the Da Vinci Code.” Encourage your friends and relatives to listen to the broadcast!
