We Already Won the War

The world gave a nervous sigh of relief when the 9/11 fifth anniversary (called “the worst terrorist act on U.S. soil”) went peacefully. But still security analysts say that the question regarding the next terrorist strike is not a matter of “if” but “when.” We are still in danger, in the words of U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, from people who are “trying to murder their way to power.” U.S. President George Bush declared, “The war against terrorism is the calling of our generation. The war is not over and it will not be over until either we or the extremists emerge victorious.”

On the spiritual realm, the battle for the souls of men continues. “Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, sneaking around to find someone to attack.” (1Peter 5:8, Contemporary English Version) The Enemy knows that his days are already numbered. So he wants to bring down with him as many as possible. He is trying to murder his way to his destruction.

However, though the battle is still ongoing, the war is already over. Christ already emerged victorious. “He stripped all the spiritual tyrants in the universe of their sham authority at the Cross and marched them naked through the streets.” (Colossians 2:15, The Message) What seemed to be defeat was actually victory. Christ triumphed at the cross!

Thus, we as believers of the Lord are to live victorious lives. In fact, “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” for “the one who is in [us] is greater than the one who is in the world.” (Romans 8:37, 1 John 4:4, New International Version)
We are fighting from a position of strength and not of weakness.

Brethren, we are not fighting FOR victory but FROM victory.
